Crepuscular rays at Durdle Door ...



Yesterday, Penny and I walked from Durdle Door to Scratchy Bottom - the early morning mist still clung to the chalk hills - the sea and sky were one quiet silvery grey vagueness - 

We'd climbed the steep pathway up Hambury Tout - sheep grazed on stony fields - rooks flew over dark tumuli on the hilltops - 

We stood upon the cliffs, gazing down at the arch - crepuscular rays, like searchlights from heaven, lit up the still sea - 

I thought that I was in a dream, in a painting by Samuel Palmer - my heart ached with a sweet strange sadness -
