For a moment I could smell the sea ...



Anne asked my dad what time he got up this morning - 

We'd just cleared the table

Soon I'd help my mum with the washing up -

Six thirty he said - it's the Navy way

Wakey Wakey they'd say - 

Rise and shine - 

The sun's scorching your eyes out ! 

Turn out, not turn over - 

When you got on deck, it would be snowing - 

Later, I saw the tiny photographs in the album - 

There was the grey ship, under a cloudy sky - 

There were the chippies, grouped around a lifebuoy - 
 
For a moment I could hear their breezy raillery, smell the sea inside the airless lounge -
