Sailing away from all he knew ...





Town Criers crossed the bridge for pints of Forty-Niner - 

They wore fanciful lace and carried burnished hand bells - 

Dads with sun burnt knees wore holiday trilbys - 

Anne bought luscious handfuls of ripe tomatoes - 

A man selling rings said you'll have to catch me -  

Two pensioners, enthroned on their mobility scooters, sipped lattes - 

Visitors took Instagrams of the Saturday Market -

The Monarch slowly turned in the river - 

Its steam whistle had summoned tipsy idlers from The Granary -

I caught a glimpse of the skipper in the wheelhouse - 

He gazed downriver as if he were Magellan, sailing away from all he knew -
