The shining sea had swallowed him ...





The blackthorn above Winspit was not yet in blossom - 

A heavy swell drove the waves across the rocks - 

Two cormorants flew low over the wavetops - 

A skylark sang - 

Three deer grazed upon the steep hillside - 

We stood on the clifftop path to St Adhelm's Head - 

Below us, the bright turbulent sea reflected the spring sunlight - 

I thought of the boy who'd drowned here one summer - 

The sun had warmed his flawless body - 

The sea had swallowed him under a shining sky -
