Sainsburys carpark was full -
A boy pushed a centipede of trolleys past a Skoda Octavia -
I listened to Jazz Record Requests -
A widower requested something by Bix Beiderbecke -
I remembered how my dad had once loved jazz -
Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet, Buddy Bolden -
They were the companions of his golden days -
Now he sits in the lounge of memory -
There's no music there, only the theme tune of Midsomer Murders -
From time to time he'll sing in the kitchen -
He'll open a bottle of Sole Star -
He'll sing And we'll go back to Oggie land -
Where they can't tell sugar from tissue paper, tissue paper, marmalade and jam -
Each long day will repeat itself -
Each song will sound the same -
