The merman and the nymph ...



We walked through the sunlit rooms of the golden house - 

The library overlooked the park - tall cedars touched the sky - 

There were bound volumes of The Gentleman's Magazine on the drowsing shelves - 

Mysterious folios graced a long table - 

In a bedroom, I came across a carving of a merman - 

Nearby was a dark splendid bed - 

The merman had a slender coiling tail -

To his left, carved in the same wood, a nymph bent her head - 

I imagined the two of them, watching over the ones who slept - 

Marvellous creatures, they were beyond the touch of time -
