Their faces were like like unsettling masks ...



When I mowed the lawn, I forgot the braying headlines - 

Earlier, I'd thought I was living in The Thirties

I was sitting next to Auden in a dark bar - 

I, too, was living in a low dishonest decade

I scooped up grass cuttings in my hands - 

I walked bare foot over the fragrant lawn - 

I forgot the hateful headline in The Sun

I could not recall the features of the big beasts urging Brexit - 

Their faces were like unsettling masks, half formed, melting, floating in the air before me -
