Warm earth in his hair ...

Reading the memorial in the sunlit nave, I pictured the young man's face -

I saw him fall far from this quiet place -  

Mourned by his fellow officers - 

Remembering the chill fields of his boyhood as he fell -

Placed in a womanless bed - 

Warm earth in his hair -
