Knocker's lament ...

We moved into The Old School House in September 1997 - Sophie was sad to leave The Glades - even now she remembers the swings in the little park - no teacher could ever surpass Mrs Sharpe -

The removal van had only just gone, inching its way up the narrow lane - we walked down towards the river, waiting at the level crossing -

The white gates shook as the Waterloo train went past -

Knocker came out of the railway men's hut to open the gates -

She's gone he said - they killed her - Princess Diana

This weekend, I recalled that time of fairy tale grief -

We were walking past Lady Saint Mary's Church - I saw a small stone set in the turf, under a delicate tree -

The words on the stone told me that the tree was a gift to Wareham to commemorate the wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer

A date was also carved into the stone - 29 July 1981

Knocker had been genuinely upset - he seemed close to tears -

She's gone he said she's gone
