They left their words upon the air like feathers -

I saw him in my dream last night -
There he was -

I knew in my dream that he was dead -
I saw him again in his final bed -

Yet in my dream the dead walked with the living -

I heard their voices -
Their hands touched mine -

They left their words upon the air like feathers -

Birthday gifts ...

These paintings were my birthday gifts -

This was my dance -

This was my wild garden -

This burning sun warms my house -

I swim in this turquoise sea -

A boy plays a lyre under my olive trees -

This is my bed of asphodels -

These bright fish were caught for me -

The chapel on the hill ...

I took my prayer to the chapel on the hill -

Soft rain fell upon the quiet land -

Cattle grazed in watery fields -

A leafless tree joined earth to heaven -

Violets were a tender purple -

Wood smoke scented the air in the village -

The sea was veiled in mist -

An egret flew above a swift flowing stream -

I placed my prayer upon a shelf of gentle stone -

I left a white shell upon the folded paper -

Stay with me, your special boy I'd written -

Through the ancient doorway my life waited for me -

The hidden house ...

We saw the deer in the garden of the hidden house -

This was their hour -

They cast their silence upon the lawn -

Our tongues were stilled -

No words came -

The birds sang their songs -

The white tree touched the gentle stone -

Walking along the sand bar at Shipstal Point ..

We walked along the sand bar at Shipstal Point -

Small waves broke upon the pale shore -

Leafless oaks netted the wind -

Tidal creeks held the ebbing tide -

Low lying islands were dark with shadow -

We smelled the coconut scent of the gorse flowers -

We heard the mysterious words of the birds -

How the years have surprised us ...

Jack Johnson
was singing in Billy Winters

Cool boys with beards like Walter Raleigh were serving Americanos -

We watched the kite surfers sweeping across the bay -

They tamed the salty gale with strong hands -

I thought of asking for a fiery cocktail -

There were forget me nots in flower along the path -

A small castle faced the shining sea -

Rowing boats were half buried in the sand -

A delicate teapot was left upon a green table -

We talked about our children and how the years had surprised us -

Unstrung pearls ...

I walked with Anne along the river to Redcliffe -

Soon the poplars would be in leaf -

The three trees on Saint John's Hill would wear their Easter blossom -

Yachts rode the rising tide -

I picked a celandine flower -

I held memories in my hand like unstrung pearls -
